Does Coffee Dehydrate You? What the Research Says

Moderate coffee drinking does not cause net dehydration. Caffeine is mildly diuretic, but the water in your cup more than compensates. Here’s what the studies actually show.

The short answer: no, moderate coffee does not dehydrate you

Drinking up to about 4 cups of coffee a day does not cause net dehydration. Caffeine has a mild diuretic effect — it makes you produce slightly more urine — but the water in your coffee more than offsets that loss. A 2014 study published in *PLOS ONE* found no significant difference in hydration markers between men who drank 4 cups of coffee per day and those who drank the same volume of water.
The "coffee dehydrates you" belief comes from older research on high-dose caffeine pills given to people who didn’t normally consume caffeine — a scenario that doesn’t reflect how most people drink coffee.

What the science says

The most cited study is Killer et al. (2014) in *PLOS ONE*. Fifty male coffee drinkers spent two 3-day periods either drinking 4 × 200 ml cups of coffee or the same volume of water. Researchers measured body mass, total body water, blood, and urine. There was no significant difference in hydration status between the two groups.
A review in the *European Journal of Clinical Nutrition* (2003) reached the same conclusion: moderate caffeine intake (up to 300–400 mg/day) does not produce a fluid loss greater than the volume consumed. The diuretic effect is measurable but small — and your body adapts with regular use.
The Institute of Medicine (now National Academies) includes caffeinated beverages in its daily fluid intake recommendations for the same reason.

When caffeine can affect hydration

There are situations where caffeine’s diuretic effect matters more:
Very high doses (>500 mg at once): Large single doses can increase urine output noticeably. This is roughly 5+ cups of coffee in a short window.
Caffeine-naïve individuals: If you rarely drink caffeine and then have several cups, the diuretic effect is stronger because you haven’t built tolerance.
Exercise in heat: During intense or prolonged exercise, even a small extra fluid loss can matter. Drink water alongside coffee in this scenario.

Practical hydration tips for coffee drinkers

Count your coffee as fluid. An 8 oz cup of coffee is roughly 99% water. It hydrates you.
Don’t force extra water "to compensate." There’s no evidence you need a glass of water for every cup of coffee.
Watch for signs of dehydration from other causes. Dark yellow urine, dry mouth, and fatigue can signal under-hydration — but that’s more likely from not drinking enough total fluids, not from coffee specifically.
During intense exercise: drink plain water or an electrolyte drink in addition to any caffeine you use as a pre-workout.
