Black Coffee

No milk, all coffee — Americano, long black, red eye, and everyday drip, and how they’re built.

Black coffee is coffee served without milk — but that still covers a surprising range of drinks. An Americano is espresso diluted with hot water; a long black reverses the order, pouring espresso over the water to preserve the crema. Drip coffee is brewed by gravity through a filter, and a red eye is drip coffee with a shot of espresso dropped in for extra kick.

These drinks differ in strength, body, and caffeine more than most people expect. Our guides compare them head-to-head so you can order (or brew) exactly the cup you want.
