How to use the brew ratio calculator

The brew ratio is the weight of coffee versus the weight of water. A ratio of 1:16 (one gram of coffee per 16 grams of water) is the balanced golden-ratio starting point for pour over and drip.
  • Stronger cup: move toward 1:14
  • Lighter cup: move toward 1:18
  • French press: try 1:14; espresso is a different world at roughly 1:2
Weigh your coffee and water with a scale — it's the single cheapest upgrade to your brewing.

Why ratio matters more than your machine

Get the ratio right and an ordinary brewer makes great coffee; get it wrong and the best gear can't save the cup. Read the full coffee-to-water ratio guide for the method-by-method chart.
