How to Clean a Coffee Maker: Step-by-Step Guide

The short answer

Run a 50/50 white vinegar and water solution (or 1 tablespoon citric acid per 4 cups of water) through a full brew cycle, then run two cycles of plain water to rinse. Do this once a month. Between deep cleans, rinse the carafe and basket with hot water after every brew and wipe down the warming plate.

Daily care (2 minutes)

After every brew: discard the used filter and grounds immediately. Rinse the brew basket and carafe with hot water. Wipe the lid and warming plate.

Don’t let old coffee sit. Brewed coffee left on a hot plate for more than 30 minutes develops a burnt, acrid flavor and bakes residue onto the carafe.

Monthly deep clean: vinegar method

1. Fill the reservoir with equal parts white vinegar and water (e.g., 4 cups each for a 10-cup machine).
2. Brew half a cycle, then pause. Let the vinegar solution sit inside the machine for 30 minutes. This dissolves lime scale inside the boiler and tubing.
3. Finish the brew cycle. Discard the vinegar from the carafe.
4. Rinse twice. Fill the reservoir with plain water and run two full cycles, discarding the water each time. This removes any vinegar taste.
5. Wash removable parts. Soak the brew basket, carafe, and lid in warm soapy water for 5 minutes. Rinse and dry.
If your tap water is hard (above 120 ppm TDS), clean every 2–3 weeks instead of monthly. Hard water builds visible white scale faster.

Citric acid alternative

Citric acid is odorless, rinses cleaner, and works as well as vinegar. Dissolve 1 tablespoon of food-grade citric acid in a full reservoir of water. Run a complete brew cycle, then rinse with one cycle of plain water (citric acid leaves less residual taste than vinegar).
Citric acid is sold in the canning aisle of most grocery stores for about $4–6 per bag. A single bag lasts 10+ cleanings. It’s the same acid used in most commercial descaling solutions at a fraction of the price.

Brew time has slowed — a cycle that used to take 6 minutes now takes 9+. Scale is restricting water flow.
Coffee tastes flat, bitter, or stale even with fresh beans. Rancid oils in the basket or carafe are tainting the brew.

Can I use apple cider vinegar to clean a coffee maker?

White distilled vinegar works better. Apple cider vinegar has a stronger odor and contains sugars that can leave residue. If it’s all you have, it will still descale, but rinse with three water cycles instead of two.
