How to use a drip coffee bag
- 1
Boil and rest the water
Boil fresh water and let it sit 30 seconds to reach 195–205°F (90–96°C).
- 2
Hang the bag
Tear open the drip bag and hook its side flaps over the rim of your mug so the filter sits above the base of the cup.
- 3
Bloom
Pour just enough water to wet all the grounds (about 30 ml) and wait 30 seconds while the coffee blooms and releases gas.
- 4
Pour in stages
Slowly add the rest of your water in 2–3 pours, keeping the water level below the top of the filter.
- 5
Lift and enjoy
Once the water has drained through (about 2.5–3 minutes total), lift out the bag, discard it, and drink.

How much water for a drip coffee bag?
A standard 10 g drip bag makes one balanced cup with about 150 ml (5 oz) of water — a 1:15 ratio. Want it stronger? Drop to ~130 ml. Lighter? Go up to ~170 ml. The calculator scales this to your exact bag size and number of bags. Why one bag makes a small cup
Here's the catch most people hit: a single drip bag is built for a ~150 ml cup, but a typical US mug holds 350 ml (12 oz). Fill that whole mug from one bag and you're brewing at 1:35 — thin and watery. The fix is simple: use two bags for a big mug, or accept a smaller, richer cup. Switch to By cup size mode above to see exactly what your mug will taste like.Drip bag caffeine and cost
A 10 g bag delivers roughly 120 mg of caffeine — about the same as a regular cup of drip coffee. Check the caffeine calculator to plan your day, or the coffee cost calculator to compare drip bags against café prices.Frequently asked questions
How much water do you use for a drip coffee bag?
About 150 ml (5 oz) for a balanced cup from a standard 10 g bag. Use 130 ml for a stronger cup and 170 ml for a lighter one.
Can you use a drip bag twice?
No. A single-serve drip bag is spent after one brew — re-pouring water gives a weak, bitter, over-extracted cup. Use a fresh bag each time.
How many drip bags for a large mug?
A 12 oz (350 ml) mug needs 2 bags for full strength. From one bag you can still make a good ~180 ml cup, just don’t try to fill the whole mug.
How much caffeine is in a drip bag coffee?
About 120 mg per 10 g bag — similar to a standard cup of drip coffee. A 12 g bag runs closer to 145 mg.
What water temperature is best for drip bags?
Use water at 195–205°F (90–96°C) — just off the boil. Water straight off a rolling boil can scorch the grounds and taste bitter.
